Best Burritos in Austin!

Best Burritos in Austin!

Hey guys, I consider myself a bit of a burrito connoisseur. I eat a lot of burritos, and I genuinely love a good one. So if you are a fellow burrito fan, you have come to the right place, because this guide is all about my favorite burritos in town.

Crispy Super Style Burrito at Asados Taqueria

My number 1 burrito spot is Asado’s Taqueria. I’ve been following them since the days when they operated out of a small ghost kitchen at Springdale General. Since then, they’ve evolved the concept to focus on Mission style burritos, tacos, and bowls.

The burritos here keep things classic, with steamed tortillas that you can also have grilled until crispy if you prefer. They offer a “super” style that adds sour cream, guacamole, and grilled cheese, or you can keep it simple and order it without the extras. By default, the burritos come with pinto beans, rice, and pico de gallo.

My go to order is the steak burrito, crispy style. I also ask for no rice on mine. The flavors really shine here, and it tastes even better with the house made salsa. It’s easily one of the best burritos in town in my opinion.

Mission Style Burrito at Taqueria de Diez

My next favorite burrito actually comes from a taco spot: Taqueria De Diez. They also do a Mission style burrito, but they use imported Sonoran style flour tortillas rather than making them in house. They add a layer of grilled cheese to the tortilla, and guacamole is available as an add on.

My go to order is the campechano burrito with both al pastor and asada. It honestly reminds me a lot of the burritos at El Farolito in San Francisco. The burritos here are generously filled with beans, rice, and plenty of meat, making them one of the best options in town.

Overall, I still give a slight edge to Asado’s because I prefer the flavor there, but the two spots are different enough that I highly recommend trying both.

The Magical Bean and Cheese at Jew Boy Burritos

One of my favorite burritos in town is the Magical Bean and Cheese Burrito from JewBoy Burgers. I’ve watched this burrito evolve over the years. The refried beans used to be a bit soupier, but now they are thicker and paired with a generous layer of melty queso on top.

What I love is that, despite being just a bean and cheese burrito, it feels surprisingly substantial. The tortilla is excellent, with just the right amount of crisp around the edges from the griddle. The beans themselves are incredibly flavorful and made with schmaltz, so keep in mind that this is not a vegetarian burrito. Their savory richness pairs perfectly with the white queso, making this one of the best bean and cheese burritos I’ve ever had.

The burrito is also a great value. I believe it sells for about $5 these days, though I still remember when it was only $4.

The Eggsplosion at T Locs Sonora

Everyone is going to tell you to order the carne asada burrito at T-Loc’s, but after trying it, I actually think their best burrito is the Explosion. It is stuffed with carne asada, refried beans, Monterey Jack cheese, hash browns, and 2 fried eggs with runny yolks. Honestly, it is basically the breakfast burrito of your dreams.

It has all the right textures and flavors, all wrapped in their imported Sonoran style tortillas. I first tried this burrito after a pretty expensive meal at Canje. It ended up being our “after dinner dinner,” and it hit the spot so perfectly that I still think about it.

If you are looking for one of the best burritos in Austin, T-Loc’s is absolutely worth a visit.

The Fish Burrito at Cabo Bobs

I think just about everyone in Austin has a favorite burrito order at Cabo Bob’s. It is one of those build your own burrito spots that seems to have a loyal following, and with multiple locations around town, it is easy to see why.

My go to order is the fish burrito. I start with their fresh cilantro tomatillo tortilla, which they press and cook right in front of you. Then I add white rice, black beans, fried fish, queso, cilantro, shredded cheese, lettuce, cabbage, plenty of lime juice to cut through the richness, and a drizzle of their 99 sauce. It might sound like an unusual combination, but trust me, it is incredible. I always grab an extra side of hot sauce as well.

Their fried fish is especially good, and if you are a regular, be sure to pick up a punch card. After 6 burritos, your 7th one is free.
