The BEST Kolache/Klobasnik Spots in Austin, TX.

The BEST Kolache/Klobasnik Spots in Austin, TX.

Let's talk about Kolaches! I grew up loving kolaches, I would wake up at 6 am to drive to pick up bags of kolaches at Kolache Factory in high school. It wasn't till my college years where I realized that technically meat filled kolaches are actually properly known as Klobasnik! I call them Kolaches because if you grow up in Texas , every one calls them that, but I do want to acknowledge the proper name. Anyway, so my husband and I have been together since highschool and we're both now 28. He used to drive 3-4 hours every weekend to see me since he ended up going to UT Dallas. On route to see me, sometimes he would stop by Czech Stop and bring me klobasnik I was OBSESSED! Thank you hubby. Last week I had a weird revelation where I realized that I haven't had amazing kolaches in awhile. So join me as I embark on this Kolache Journey!

Kerlaches- Best Overall Klobasnik/Kolache

Brisket and Cheese Kolache

Smoked Pork and Monterrey Jack

The Kerlaches at Kerlaches are the best Klobasnik in Austin. These transcend what it means to be a meat filled pastry. When I say that I mean this isn't your average Klobasnik. It's like the owners of Kerlache took a classic recipe and elevated it above everyone else in town. Per their website "Kerlaches are made with real oak smoked Texas barbecue, our secret original dough recipe and lots of love". The bread is soft, yeasty, slightly sweet, but have a slight crisp on the outside. I'm drooling as I type this. We ordered the Brisket and cheddar, Smoked pork and monterrey Jack cheese, and the Jalapeno cheese sausage one. They are huge which is great because they're easily the most expensive you'll find on this list. But the Kerlaches are jammed pack with meat. I'm usually not a big fan of bbq filled things, the bbq is often too salty and overwhelms the vessel it's in. But with the Kerlaches, they had perfectly seasoned and tender barbecue inside and the melted cheese complimented their respected meats perfectly. Seriously like both the Smoked pork and brisket kerlaches were so perfect yet so different that I can't decide which one is better. I ate them in less than 5 minutes. The sausage one was good but paled in comparison to it's siblings. You can text to preorder online. I'm surprised these aren't selling out hours in advance, they're that good. Austin Kolache and Koffee - Best Traditional Czech Style Klobasnik/Kolache

Jalapeno sausage cheese Klobasnik

Ham and Cheese Klobasnik

Austin Kolache and Koffee is a huge hidden gem in Austin. Not many people have heard of them despite them probably having the closest thing you'll find the authentic Czech kolaches in town. Per their website "Austin Kolache & Koffee Shoppe  (AKA “The Kolache Shoppe”) has been serving Austinites authentic Czech Kolache’s for more than 40 years.". They experienced a change in ownership during the pandemic and moved locations to Mesa Drive. I preordered online for pick up, worried they would sell out. I want to note that they only serve kolache up until 2 pm and they transition to only selling pizza. Walking in, the shop itself is kind of dark and looks very quaint. The kolache are in display in a glass/wooden case. The kolaches were very affordable. The fruit kolache cost me 1.75 and the klobasnik were 3 dollars if i remember correctly. They were pretty large in my opinion. They also sell cinnamon rolls but i didn't order any. These kolache/klobasnik were fluffy, soft, and the meat and cheese ratio of the ham and cheese was great. The sausage inside the jalapeno cheese klobasnik was meaty, had a great texture and bite. These reminded me of the ones I used to get at Czech Stop. Overall, would rank them top when it comes to traditional klobasnik. Overall, it was my number 2 favorite because the Kerlache ones blew me away. Here is their instagram.

Batch Craft Beer and Kolache. Most instagrammable Klobasnik/Kolache

Assorted Kolache and Klobasnik I ordered.

Pepperoni, Ham and cheese, jalapeno cheese sausage, and sausage.

I'm including Batch in this line up because It's the most popular of all the kolache spots in Austin, TX. They're very popular on instagram and have a great location. These kolaches are served throughout the day so they're really easy to grab without worrying about sell out. They also have this large outdoor patio making it the perfect spot to hang out. I personally would rank these maybe top 5 of kolaches I've had in Austin. My issue is the price to filling to bread ratio. These are the second most expensive kolaches I've had and they give far less filling that most spots. They retail at about 4 dollars each. The bread is nice and crispy on the outside and remind me of croissants but there isn't too much flavor imparted in the dough since it's so thin. The filling is tasty but these are the thick czech style sausages you'll get at other spots. In general, this is a great spot to visit for kolaches throughout the day and to hang out but I wouldn't say they're the best. Here is their instagram. Here is the website.

Round Rock Donuts: Best Quick Fix Kolache/Klobasnik

Round Rock Donuts Kolaches

Round Rock Donuts not only have the best donuts but they have some really really good Klobasnik! My favorite being the ones with cheese! They have locations in Roundrock and Cedar Park. These are always warm and the sweet yeasty taste are addictive. Here is their website.
